About the Storytellers

Gino Brazil grew up in the tiny northern New Mexico village of Cimarrón. He attended the College of Santa Fe in the mid-1970’s and taught in the Española and Pojoaque public schools for 16 years.  Every fall Gino would introduce a storytelling unit to his students, which highlighted northern New Mexico cuentos and folklore. In 1996 Gino was named Northern New Mexico Community College’s first full-time public information director and remained there until his retirement in 2007. In the last year, Gino has been teaching volunteer classes at LaFarge Library in Santa Fe, including writing and storytelling, calavera (skeleton) cartoon art, and basic Spanish. He has also extensively researched the history of storytelling and folklore in northern New Mexico and two of the pioneers in that field, Aurelio Espinosa and Juan B. Rael.

Kandra Payne is a native of Creede, Colorado, and holds a degree in drama from the Colorado College. She worked six seasons at the Creede Repertory Theatre before becoming an equity stage manager. She’s lived and worked in most of the great cities of this country, including Chicago, Seattle, New York, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. Now a resident of Santa Fe, she still spends her summers in Creede, telling ghost stories to just about anyone who will listen. Payne's book Haunted Creede was published in 2020 and can be found on the shelves at Santa Fe Public Library.
