Author Talk

Join novelist and poet Demetria Martinez for her talk, "Hope in Dark Times: Poetry, Politics, Prayer"

Demetria Martinez is a writer, poet and activist based in La Cienega, New Mexico where she lives with her wife. Her books include the widely translated novel, Mother Tongue (Ballantine); a short story collection, The Block Captain's Daughter (U. of Oklahoma Press); a collection of essays, Berlitz Tape Chicana (U. of Oklahoma Press); and two books of poetry, The Devil's Workshop (U. of Arizona Press) and Breathing Between the Lines (U of Oklahoma Press). Her novel is based in part on her 1988 conspiracy trial when she was facing a potential 25 years in prison for allegedly transporting Salvadoran refugees into the US; a jury acquitted her on First Amendment grounds.  In 2024, she cotranslated her grandfather, Luis Martinez’s corridos, a collection that appeared in the New Mexico Historical Review.  Casa Urraca Press will be publishing her next book, Hand to Hand, a poetic collaboration with writer Susan Sherman.
